Okumidori and Gokou are two Japanese tea cultivars that bud later in spring than Yabukita, the plant that covers most of Japan's tea acreage. Okumidori was registered in June 1974 as Cha Norin No. 32, bred at the national tea research station in Kanaya, Shizuoka, and it buds about 11 days after Yabukita (Breeding Research 8:113-117, 2006). Gokou (also written Gokō) is older and came from somewhere else entirely, selected in 1954 by the Kyoto Prefectural Tea Research Institute out of native Uji seedlings, and it buds about 3 days after Yabukita (Kyoto Prefectural Tea Research Institute).
That gap of a few days sounds like nothing. On a working farm it is the difference between a calm harvest and a frantic one, and it quietly shapes what ends up in your bowl.

What are the Okumidori and Gokou cultivars?
A cultivar is a cultivated variety, a single plant selected once and then propagated by cuttings forever after, so every bush is a clone of the original. We covered the whole landscape of these plants in our guide to Japanese tea cultivars. This piece goes down into two of them.
Both Okumidori and Gokou sit on the late side of the spring calendar, and both earned reputations in shaded tea. Beyond that they have almost nothing in common. One is a modern state breeding program's product, documented across two decades of trials. The other is a farmer's-eye selection from plants that were already growing in Uji, with no recorded parents at all.
What does late-budding actually mean on a tea farm?
It means the new shoots break later in spring, which staggers the harvest. The reason that matters was written down plainly by the breeding team at the national tea research station, and it is a labor story before it is a flavor story.
By the late 1970s Yabukita had taken over. It passed 50% of Japan's tea garden area in 1982 and reached 76% by 2012 (MAFF, 2012). When one plant dominates that completely, every bush in the country is ready on roughly the same day. The breeders listed the consequences: harvest timing concentrated into one window, overwork during it, quality losses on the fields plucked too late, and tea factories forced to build capacity for a peak they used once a year (Breeding Research, 2006).
So they bred plants that would come early and plants that would come late, on purpose, to spread the work. Japan's agriculture ministry still frames it that way, calling the goal the dispersal of the working period. A farm planting Saemidori, Yabukita and Okumidori together is not collecting varieties. It is buying itself three harvest windows instead of one.
There is a tempting shortcut here that I want to close off. Late budding does help the new shoots emerge after the late-frost window, and that is real. It does not mean the plant itself is tougher. The breeders' own trial data rates Okumidori's tolerance of split-type freeze injury as moderate, while Yabukita's is rated strong. The advantage is in the timing, not in the constitution of the bush.
Okumidori: bred at Kanaya, registered in 1974
The cross was made in 1953 at the national tea research station in Kanaya, Shizuoka. The mother was Yabukita. The father was a Shizuoka native seedling recorded as Shizuoka Zairai No. 16, chosen because it was late-budding and grew well. Seed was collected in October 1954, the promising individual was tracked from 1959, and the resulting line carried the name F1NN29 for a decade of testing before it was finally named and registered in June 1974 as Cha Norin No. 32 (Breeding Research, 2006).
Twenty-one years from pollination to a name. Regional trials ran across twelve prefectures between 1969 and 1973 before anyone was willing to commit.
Two things stand out in the trial data. The first is yield: first-flush fresh leaf came in at 598 kg per 10 ares against Yabukita's 330, which is a substantial margin. The second is what the numbers do not say. Okumidori is widely marketed as an umami cultivar, and the breeders' own composition figures for unshaded sencha put its total amino acids at 1.76% against Yabukita's 1.78%. Total nitrogen was 5.10% against 5.11%. Those are the same number. What the breeders actually wrote was that the taste has no off-notes and has umami, which is a statement about cleanness rather than intensity.
That distinction explains the plant's real career. The same paper notes that Okumidori matters not only on its own but as a blending component, because it does not damage the character of whatever it is blended with. A clean, high-yielding, well-colored base is commercially valuable in a way that a loud one is not.
Adoption was slow at first, and the breeders were blunt about why: late-budding cultivars fetched lower first-flush prices. Attention turned around 1990, and the planted area grew from roughly 715 hectares in 2002 to over 900 hectares by 2005, spread across 21 prefectures. By 2012 it held about 2% of Japan's tea garden area nationally, and 12% of Kyoto's crude tea production, second only to Yabukita there (MAFF, 2012).
Worth noting for anyone reading old documents: Okumidori's registered use in 1974 was sencha. Its shaded-tea reputation came later. It took the agriculture minister's prize in the gyokuro division of the national tea competition in 2004 and again in 2005, and by 2006 prefectural research stations were reporting good results for tencha, the leaf that becomes matcha. That was described as promising trial work, not settled practice.
Gokou: selected from Uji native seed, not crossed
Gokou has no parents on record because nobody crossed anything. It was selected in 1954 by the Kyoto Prefectural Tea Research Institute from native Uji seedlings, carried the line name Kyoken No. 166, and it is not a national Norin cultivar at all. Kyoto's registrations from that era were Asagiri and Kyomidori. Gokou stayed a Kyoto plant.
The institute describes it as mid-to-late budding, three days behind Yabukita, with a distinctive volatile aroma it rates as superior, and it is heavily used for competition-grade gyokuro. Yield matches or beats Yabukita.
Here is where I want to be careful, because the internet is not. Kyoto Prefecture's own research institute and the Kyoto Tea Industry Council both file Gokou under gyokuro. The cultivars they list for tencha are Asahi, Samidori, Ujihikari and Tenmyo. Single-origin Gokou matcha genuinely exists and Gokou is large enough to appear by name in national cultivar area statistics for 2024 (Norinchukin Research Institute, 2026), so producers clearly do make matcha from it. But calling it a classic matcha cultivar overstates what the authoritative sources say. Traditionally a gyokuro plant, now also used for tencha by some producers, is the honest version.

The shortest way to hold them apart: Okumidori is the reliable one, and Gokou is the expressive one. Okumidori was engineered to be excellent and unobtrusive. Gokou was picked out of a field because it smelled like something.
Why late budding and shade belong together
Shading is the step that separates matcha and gyokuro from ordinary green tea. Covering the bushes for weeks before harvest changes how the leaf develops, and the shaded leaf destined for matcha is called tencha. We walk through the whole sequence in what matcha is made of.
Shading is also labor-intensive and time-bound. Covers go up, and then a clock starts. A farm running several shaded fields cannot cover and harvest all of them in the same week with the same crew, and a cultivar that arrives a week and a half after the main crop makes that schedule possible. Okumidori's late arrival is not incidental to its shaded-tea career, it is part of what makes the shaded-tea career practical.
The economics point the same way. Tencha was 7.3% of Japanese tea production in 2024 at an average crude tea price of 3,278 yen per kilogram, against sencha at 49.7% and 1,197 yen (Norinchukin Research Institute, 2026, from Japan Tea Central Association data). The late-budding penalty that held Okumidori back in the sencha market, lower first-flush prices, matters far less in a segment paying nearly three times as much.
Will you ever see these names on the tin?
Usually not, and that is not a scandal.
Blending, called gogumi, is the industry default. The reason is structural. The value chain runs from leaf growing to crude tea processing, then to the crude tea market, then to the tea merchant who does the finishing and blending, and only then to a product. The blending step sits with the merchant, downstream of the farm, which is why most matcha reaches you as a considered composition rather than a single plant.
Okumidori is a case in point. It is prized precisely as a blending component. Insisting on single-cultivar matcha as a mark of quality gets the craft backwards, because a good blend is a deliberate act, not a compromise. What the cultivar name is genuinely good for is understanding. When a producer does name Gokou on a label, they are telling you something specific about aroma. When Okumidori shows up, you are looking at a plant chosen for clean color and reliability.
